I don’t know what is making me procrastinate on this bench. I think maybe it was the hand planing that was a part of this next step. Well anyway, it wasn’t that hard – I just had to make the tenons on the long stretchers a bit narrower so they’d fit nice and snug in the mortises. Not too hard.
Next step – whittling some pegs for drawboring the stretchers, and at the same time getting a start on laminating the benchtop!

It’s fun to see it all go together. I can’t wait to see the top that will rest above these sweet legs.

Whittling pegs: Have you considered a dowel plate? If you have the ability to drill through metal, you can make one yourself. (On my To Do list.)

That would basically involve drilling a 5/8″ (or thereabouts) hole in a piece of metal, and then pounding a slightly larger than 5/8″ piece of wood through the hole right? Is there more to it than that? I’ll take a look through the drill bits in the electric drill box I borrowed from the office, and see if there are any metal bits. If not, might be worth buying one!

Eric,
Yep — that’s my understanding. (Again, never tried it myself.)
Probably whittle them to “pretty close”, just to make it easier to pound. And having the occasional “low spot” seems like it would also facilitate the pounding — although aesthetically it may bother you.
At The Village Carpenter’s blog, hers is mounted on top of a simple wooden box, into which the completed pegs fall.
